Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 12 September 2012 | 09:03

New Delhi Taking another step towards getting the "World Heritage City" tag for the Capital, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday gave a go-ahead to Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage's (INTACH) to prepare the final dossier for the city's nomination. Dikshit said the Cabinet had approved an MoU between INTACH and Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) for submission of the final nomination dossier. In 2008, the Delhi Government and INTACH had signed a MoU for the drawing up a conceptual report for UNESCO's tentative list.

New Delhi World Heritage CityExplaining the process of nomination for the World Heritage City tag, an INTACH official said, "A site needs to be in UNESCO's tentative list. The second agreement with the government will be for the final dossier. While the government will probably file Delhi's nomination for 2014-15, we are almost ready with the draft of the final dossier."

"A nomination dossier is to be submitted to UNESCO through the Union Ministry of Culture. Hence, DTTDC has been allowed to enter into an agreement INTACH for preparation and submission of final dossier for nomination," a Delhi government release, issued on Tuesday, said.

Keeping in mind rejections of many Indian nominations to the World Heritage list, INTACH has consulted international experts to strengthen Delhi's nomination. In June, an official was sent to meet heritage consultant Duncan Marshall in Hiroshima.

Following this meeting, the dossier was altered. The earlier dossier had marked four areas in the city — Mehrauli, Lutyens' Delhi, Nizamuddin and Shahjahanabad — for nominations, the final dossier nominates only Shahjahanabad and Lutyens' Delhi.
