City heritage activists are upbeat about Unesco’s decision to include south Mumbai’s Fort precinct in its latest tentative heritage list. ‘Getting any national or international recognition is always good as it brings a sense of pride and responsibility. The great day would be when it’s inscribed and for that there’s a long way to go, as it requires the government’s commitment for its protection and a management plan in place,’ said conservation architect Vikas Dilawari. “But with no heritage committee in place for the last one year and cessed grade-III and heritage precinct properties exempt from the committee’s purview the joy of this news is a dimmed,’’ he added.

The demolition of walls of the old Fort
“It is a wonderful development. The Fort deserves to be on the heritage list. The demolition of walls of the old Fort in the 1860s by governor Bartle Frere, who had formed the Rampart Removal Committee, led to the formation of the precinct,’’ explained Dr Varsha S Shirgaonkar, professor and head of the department of history, SNDT University.
City historian Deepak Rao said the Fort area is a matter of pride for Mumbai and it is an important testimony of the city’s history. “It was in the 1860s that governor Frere demolished the walls of the old Fort and built a city, which is today called Mumbai. The ramparts of the old Fort have mostly been demolished and can be found at a few places. But the name Fort is still in public memory, and that itself is an achievement,’’ Rao said.
